Who doesn’t love a chili dog? Okay, I am sure there are those out there that do not like chili dogs but it’s hard to believe. When I was young, I hated chili in any form. I thought it was the nastiest food humans every made that I was now forced to eat, yuck! Well, now with a more expanded and considerably changed palette, I like chili and especially like it with hot dogs! My son loves chili dogs too and prefers his with cheese. Since he is not dairy free, I make his that way. At the end of the recipe, there are instructions for the dairy-containing option.
This recipe is so easy and involves very little cooking; perfect for the Rookie Explorer and the Novice Explorer! You can even buy pre-chopped onions and tomatoes at your local grocery store if you want to make it even easier!
Even though it is an simple recipe, it packs lots of flavor into one bowl. I use Amy’s Chili because it is organic and tastes very good for something that comes from a can. The brand of chili you use will determine the level of flavor in this dish. Similarly, the type of hot dog you use will alter the flavor. I use Coleman Natural All Beef hot dogs. They have amazing flavor and do not contain any nitrates or man-made ingredients my body does not like. You can boil the hot dogs instead of browning/heating them in the skillet, but again, you will lose a ton of flavor. The addition of tater tots was kind of an accident that turned out very well. Not only do the tater tots add more substance to the dish but they also makes it a fun meal to serve kids.
